Maple Leaf Foreign Nationals Schools offer a positive and engaging learning environment in an all-English, Canadian program. Enrolment is open to all students from pre-school through Grade 9 who hold a non-Chinese passport. MLFNS-D is a British Columbia Offshore school and is accredited and inspected by the Ministry of Education. All teachers and principals are BC certified educators. MLFNS-D offers a diverse, Western educational environment designed to enrich and support the educational development of students from international families who are living in China.
While the BC Curriculum is designed for native English speakers, if appropriate language support is available, MLFNS-D welcomes English Language Learners into the program. The BC Ministry of Education designates ELL students into levels or standards and our oral interview, reading and writing entrance test helps us establish those levels. In addition to the BC mainstream classroom teacher, MLFNS-D provides language support to ELL students using a push-in (ESL teacher in the mainstream classroom) or pull-out model (ESL teacher working with groups of language learners outside the classroom), depending on the needs of the student and the particular class.
Our quality educational program also includes daily Chinese as a Second Language classes. This program will assist students in earning their Chinese high school diploma, as they progress to our dual diploma option at the high school level.
Students attend MLFNS-D from countries such as South Korea, Japan, Canada and America.
In this diverse group of students, one encounters a mix of English language abilities including many native speakers and those for whom English is a second language. These students, who are broad-minded and eager to embrace cultures and change, find themselves unified by the English language as the vehicle for communication and understanding. As they begin to share a common language as a unified student body, they become more and more enthusiastic and confident about learning and expanding their academic horizons.

Fall semester: August 22 OR Spring semester: February 27
Students entering Grade 3 or above are given a language proficiency test. If students are from an English speaking country or have multiple years in an English speaking academic program, the language proficiency test may be waived. Students are also interviewed by the principal or designate at the school.
As long as your child has a grasp of English and would not struggle in an all English academic environment, we are able to provide ESL support to allow for student success. Most grades study in an integrated environment, but students are divided by level for Language Arts and ESL, as well as for daily Mandarin studies.
The tuition and fees vary depending on FNS campus and grade. For exact costs, please contact the school directly.
MLFNS-D offers on site cafeteria style lunch services featuring a healthy balanced menu.

Uniforms are mandatory in all Maple Leaf schools, with the exception of preschool. An initial uniform package must be purchased at the time of registration and then additional pieces can be purchased individually as needed.
Boarding is not available for MLFNS-D students.
The vast majority of the MLFNS-D student population takes the school bus immediately after school, so there are no activities scheduled for after school. Club activities that focus on crafts, sports and the arts are scheduled during the last class of the day on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
